Nate Najar Trio
This Saturday night, at the St. Petersburg Museum of History, I am helping put together our Back To School event. More to come about that later in the week.... but just wanted to share with you my very talented and accomplished friend, Nate Najar, who will be adding his jazz music to our evening. Nate and I went to high school together, and I have followed him and his music for years since then. Be sure to check out his talents, and come to our event this weekend to see him in person!

Vintage Finds 5.18.2010
I am beginning this series every Wednesday about my vintage finds, since halfway through the week I am always looking for a little inspiration.And, many of you don't know that my husband and I wake up early every Saturday to go to garage and estate sales. Not that we need more stuff for our house - on the contrary actually- but we have been decorating and renovating other people's places that need little things here and there. Plus, its fun to see what other people want to get rid of for next to nothing. We love a good bargain!!
The first find is one of my favorites in our home. Our 1942 house, as previously seen here, is pretty vintage, and thus my decorating style had to adapt to the older charms inside. I instantly go for anything antique to mid century, since the age of our home falls in between.
My husband fell in love with this piece that now currently sits in our kitchen. It was at an estate sale for half off asking price for $25!! Here, I give you the Zenith all-in-one stereo and tv console:
The funny part is that the tv component itself is called the "Space Command 300" and comes complete with the original "clicker". After lots of tinkering, the TV portion itself does not work, just a lot of snow. However, our love for this piece is this:
We had talked about getting a record player for a long time, as we both love the sound of old music. The woman who owned this set had loved music, and when her kids (running the estate sale) offered up the two boxes of records for free with the console, we were sold. Actually, I was sold when the first record I pulled out was Moonlight Serenade by the Glenn Miller Orchestra, one of my grandfather's favorites. Not to mention some German music (my family has German roots) and Spanish music (my husband's roots), among other popular albums like Meet The Beatles. The record player and stereo work perfectly!

We have since covered up the tv with a runner so that it looks more like a buffet than a tv/stereo console. It makes me happy to turn on the records and cook... there's nothing like a good glass of wine and good music to make a meal great!

Anniversary Party - Playlist
Since we were hosting an outdoor party, we had to cater the music not only to the age of the crowd, but the size. Since we had a large group, we needed music that was both modern and old school, and nothing too loud to drown out the conversations between guests. Since my parents love music, we took the easy route and used their iPod for the playlist. I have made a small collection of the songs that played here:
As you can see, they like a little bit of everything! If you can't use your iPod, just set up your computer and make a free playlist here. You can add up to 180 songs on one playlist, which is perfect for an entire night of fun!

Party Playlists
Besides food, music is key to any dinner or party.... it sets the tone for the evening. I love to play flamenco music when I am making Spanish cuisine, or a jazz medley when it is a good dinner with good wine. The beauty of the internet is that you can create a playlist from your iPod or simply your computer. The one below is my new favorite for a nice, quiet dinner with my husband, or a simple meal with friends:
Check out sites like www.playlist.com, and www.lala.com to sign up and create a free playlist. If you are iPod savvy, you can go to www.iTunes.com and purchase songs to download to your iPod. I often buy music mixes on CD, like Latin Groove, Jazz Lounge, or African melodies, because they feature a melange of music to perfectly set the mood.
I often cook with music and a glass of wine.... it helps me relax after a hard day of work, and gets me in the mood for a delicious meal, even if we are only having spaghetti. Dinner always seems to taste better with a little Andrea Bocelli in the background!
