Fashion Flashback- A History of Fashion

I have been super busy lately planning a really fun event at the St. Petersburg Museum of History for Fashion Week Tampa Bay. Since we have so many fabulous garments in our archive, I thought it would be really fun to display them all! Join us to see these fabulous clothes and grab a cocktail or two! Going Back To School...

   
This past Saturday was the St. Petersburg Museum of History's Back To School event. We invited history teachers from around the county to show them the great exhibits, archives, and initiatives that can be used for and in their classrooms.

I had a ton of fun working on this event, and coming up with some cute school-themed tablescapes and details. Lets have a look:

Here is the Flight Gallery, in which we have a model of Tony Jannus's plane the Benoist, is where we hosted the event. Forgive the standard chairs, we were going for a casual look! 

For the tablescapes, we used the caterer's black linens as the base, and I purchased the brown paper in a giant roll at Lowes for $10. I made bowls out of black yarn and glue.  We filled them with real red apples, tied on some red gingham ribbons, and then used the red chiffon squares from my wedding underneath. My event chair added her own creative touch with the foam alphabet letters she bought at Michaels. The chalkboards I purchased at Joanns for $1.50 each and we reused some small vases I had at home (originally from the dollar store) to hold the crayons that guests could use to draw on the tables.

And just to get guests thinking and drawing, we added a few little drawings of our own to the tables. I love how the white crayon looks on the brown paper!

The Museum is always in need of research materials for the Archivists, as well as volunteers. I used some more of the chalkboards to let guests know how they can help!

We created pledge cards, on which guests could pledge an item or a dollar figure towards an item. I found a photo of a yellow index card online, and used it for the background of my pledge cards. I popped it into a quarter page postcard layout on Microsoft Publisher, and used the Typewriterhand font to create the cards. I think they turned out so cute!

The guests can then drop them into boxes that we had at a few locations around the museum. I took a USPS box and covered it with red gingham fabric from Joanns. I then glued a school themed name plaque to the front of each one to let people know they can use them for donations and pledge cards.

We presented our Museum In A Box project, which allows teachers in 4th and 5th grades to borrow a box of artifacts, interactive media, lesson plans, and more from the museum to teach in their classrooms. The areas of history are Native Americas, Transportation, and Sports & Recreation.

Our Native American Museum in a Box was presented by the very lively expert Hermann Trappman. Our guests raved about him!

Our Transportation Museum in a Box was presented by Jeff Danner, a local transportation expert and City Council Member.

 

And our last Museum In A Box was presented by Dennis Schrader, who has an obsession for baseball history, and owns the largest collection of signed baseballs on the planet. Luckily for us, an article in the newspaper about him came out that morning, and he brought the case of signed balls featured in the article!

The evening was not complete without the delicious food from Delectables,
and our guests seemed to like eating on styrofoam lunch trays we provided to go with our school theme.

And last but not least, the AMAZING performance from the Nate Najar Trio.

Back To School Event - St. Petersburg Museum of History

  This Saturday is the Back To School event I have been working hard on at the St. Petersburg Museum of History. For all you teachers out there, this is going to be a great event to show you all the wonderful teaching opportunities the museum has for you and your classroom. Salvador Dali

Dali Muesum Event

My husband is on the Dali Museum's Zodiac Committee and they are having an open call to artists for this year's Dali Museum Zodiac event "The Birth of Liquid Desires"!  Submit work for consideration for the silent art auction, set for August 27th, 2011 at the Dali Museum.  Submission deadline: Friday, July 29, 2011. If You Missed Us Saturday Night....

You missed an amazing time for the Bloggers Unite at MISRED Outfitters! It is great to meet so many talented and FUN bloggers! I had a crazy Saturday where I was a leadership event all day, and ran home to change for Bloggers Unite, so I apologize for looking a little frazzled (and apparently giddy upon the point of exhaustion in the blogger pic below). Since this event was for FASHION bloggers, I guess I should tell you that I wore a vintage polka dot silk top, white linen Theory pants, thrifted gold belt, and tons of vintage gold and red jewelry to the event.

 It was such a pleasure to meet Samy of Samantha's Garments, Marybeth and her sister of Jade and Willow, Laura of Artfully Artista, Priscilla of Rush Our Fashion (who came all the way from Jacksonville!), Andrea of Window Shopping Diva, and Kristen of BonBon Rose Girls.

Of course, I can't forget the incredible host Jennifer Rand of Belle de Couture, and the fabulous sisters Rebekah and Rachel of Eugenia Woods, whom I did not have a chance to talk to before I had to leave. We all managed to get a shot of everyone before I made a mad dash to my third event of the day! These fashionistas stuck around for the 600 Block's AFTER DARK event and fashion show (click here to watch), which was styled by Sara of MISRED Outfitters.

 Also featured was the lovely Erin Griffin of The Yummy Kind who made the most AMAZING cupcakes, which were all vegan. My favorites were her Red Velvet and Key Lime Coconut. You should check out her site for cooking classes and recipes. 

And of course in good Hostess fashion, I provided an appetizer and beverages. I brought with me this recipe, which I have named "The Starter" (another post about that soon), some Margarita Punch, and infused water (recipe to come!). Thanks to all those who came out to meet us!

Bloggers Unite & Hostess Tip #4

My good friend Sara, owner of MISRED Outfitters, my FAVORITE vintage store in our area, asked me to be a part of her Bloggers Unite event this Saturday night, which is being hosted by another great blogger, Jennifer Rand of Belle de Couture. Sara included me because I am not only a local blogger, but I am actually really into fashion, vintage clothing (half of my closet is either vintage or from thrift stores, believe it or not!), and fashion blogs. Besides Jennifer's blog, I read daily the posts of Kelly, Leandra, Jane, Judy, and more! Vintage clothing can be fun and classic, PERFECT for any event, and vintage clothing for all occasions can be found at local thrift and resale boutiques in your area. And with that comes my next hostess tip...

HOSTESS TIP #4: Part of being a hostess is presenting yourself in attire that fits your event. As the hostess, opening the door when guests to arrive and closing it behind them when they leave are your guests' FIRST AND LAST IMPRESSIONS OF YOUR PARTY! It is ALWAYS important to think about what you are wearing just as much as it is the little details of the party. If you look put together and festive, your event will be fun to guests, no matter what little details are off, or problems that arise along the way. Trust me!
